R.E. Hartanto

(b. 1973, Bandung)

He graduated from Fine Arts Department, FSRD – Bandung Institute of Technology in 1998.  Hartanto worked as a lecturer’s assistant for two years before attending residency at Rijksakademie v.B.K., Amsterdam, The Netherlands for two years (2001-2002).  Upon his return in 2003, he co-founded and organized the Bandung Center for New Media Arts & Common Room Networks Foundation with Gustaff H. Iskandar, Reina Wulansari, T. Ismail Reza & Tarlen Handayani. He resigned from both organizations early 2007 and worked full-time for his arts. Between the period of 1998-2011 Hartanto had received several grants for exhibitions and residencies in several parts of the world.

RE Hartanto is best known for his provocative portraitures that narrate stories of contemporary social political issues that are prevalent in our society.

Prilla Tania

(b. – , Bandung)

Prilla Tania was born, raised and is based in Bandung. It is also home to her alma mater  Bandung Institute of Technology where she studied sculpture.

Despite the wide array of works she produces, Prilla carries through a consistent tendency to question everything in existence conceptually and materially. Her works often veer into feminist territory or sociological questioning. At times, she speaks of human emotions and consciousness, transcending any specific ideology or conceptual paradigm to simply play with materials, their possibilities and limitations.

Her works often push the boundaries between flexible and inflexible – cutting edge media art and the visuals of appliqué works — in order to strip away layers of artistic pretension in order to draw attention to contemporary human concerns of the lack of living and being space.

Dead elephant leaves an ivory, a dead tiger leaves the stripes, a man dies leaving a name“. Her work for this exhibition departs from the question of human relations (consumer) with the media and connects with the lyrics of the song – about death and immortality. She will present a video performance installation with a chalk board, capturing the performance – frame by frame and later turning it into a video.

Henrycus Napitsunargo

(b. – , Indonesia)

Henrycus Napitsunargo is a photographer and a prolific darkroom printer based inBandung. He is renowned for photographing urban city scenes and private family moments.  He has been in numerous solo and group exhibitions since 2007. In his works, Henrycus often juxtaposes different signs together, engaging the audience in a form of debate, questioning their beliefs with those regulated by society.

In his photographs, Henrycus often features the assimilation of the Chinese culture in Indonesia. He highlights how the Chinese culture tries to adapt and blend in a culturally-different environment without leaving out its unique identity. In Elevation of Negotiation 1 for example, Henrycus captures the surroundings of a mosque inIndonesia infused with Chinese-style architecture.

Dita Gambiro

(b. – , Indonesia)

Dita Gambiro’s works first caught the attention of the art public through her interesting use of human hair. In 2011, she was awarded the Bandung Contemporary Art Awards. Amongst many other exhibitions, Dita recently participated in Dysfashional #6 – an exhibition held by theFrenchCulturalCentre and Galeri Nasional Indonesia. Dita’s affinity for hair is embedded in the culture in which she grew up in and her role  as a woman. For women, hair is often a symbol of beauty, like a sacred crown. Dita has made use of this unconventional medium in numerous ways to discuss issues that surround her as a young woman.

Bagus Pandega

(b. –  , Indonesia)

Bagus A. Pandega graduated from the Institute of Technology from Bandung in fine arts but he is better known among his peers as an artist who incorporates sound or elements of noise in his works. With each sculptural creation he attempts to integrate light and kinetics. This exploration of the relationship between sound, light and movement sets him apart from his peers.

As part of his submission for the Indonesian Biennale, he produced a sculpture of a human body where the insides are visible. The lungs, made of leather, inflate and deflate mimicking the act of breathing by sending air to the rest of the sculpture. His objective was for the viewer to become conscious of their body and organs.

Andry Mochammad

(b. 1977 – 2008, Indonesia)

Andry was an artist who made an important mark in the development of contemporary art in Bandung in the late 1990′s. His contributions developed a unique character and distinctive style that is rich within the works of young artist from Bandung. He constantly explored and expanded the boundaries of medium with a varied use of video media, installations, objects, performance art, painting, sound art, site specific works of art.  Andry Mochammad was also a collector of an assortment of peculiar objects and dreamt of owning a mammoth fossil to call his own.

His video works have been screened in OK Video,Jakartain 2003, 2005 and 2007. He has exhibited extensively inIndonesiaand was also an active member to VideoLab, an organisation that documents and screens video work in Bandung.

S. Nandagopal

(b. 1946,Bangalore)

Born in Bangalore in 1946, Nandagopal is today one of Asia’s foremost expressive sculptures. As the son of famed artist, K.C.S Paniker, Nandagopal was raised in an inspiring and creative atmosphere.

Nandagopal was educated at Madras University’s Loyola College where he graduated with a degree in physics in 1966. Following that, Nandagopal began his training as an artist at the Madras Government College of Arts and Crafts. Working only with metals, mediums rarely utilized in fine art, Nandagopal’s education has enabled him to combine his artistic creativity with the technical complexity required to create his sculptures.

The artist’s exceptional skill and the mastery of his choice of material are evidenced by his numerous awards. His accolades include the 1968 and 1978 Award of the Madras State Lalit Kala Akademi and the 1978 Gold Medal at the IVth Triennale International in New Delhi. Nandagopal was also awarded the Homi Bhabha Fellowship by the Government of India in 1980.

Since the 1970s, Nandagopal has exhibited extensively around the world. From Antwerp to Teheran, Nandagopal’s works have found their way into museums and private collections both in Indian and internationally. 2006 sees Nandagopal exhibiting the largest collection of his works at the Singapore Art Museum.

Rathin Kanji

(b. 1970, India)

Recognised by both art critics and collectors as a serious artist to follow up on, Rathin Kanji makes a startling departure from the mainstream of Indian painting. The colours in his paintings express his philosophy of life- white represents birth, black represents death and red is the symbol of energy, power and human rituals.

Full of energy and possibilities, his works represent a juxtaposition of ancient and modern inspirations, life and death, reality and imagination, unusual textures and colours. His works have been hailed as “wise and sombre”.

He has garnered several awards such from the Indian Society of Oriental Art (1996), Reflection of Another Day (1996), Bulbarga Tamil Sangam (1995).

Rathin Kanji

Rathin Kanji completed his art training in B.F.A.-Painting at M.M.K College of Visual Art, Gulbarga University, Karnataka, India. In 1996 he was invited to be a life member at the BombayArt Society, Mumbai and a Member (Jt. Secretary) at RAD Calcutta. Just a year before that, in 1995 he was also a founding member at Figment, Calcutta.

Paritosh Sen

(b. 1918-2008, Bangladesh)

One of India’s most sought-after artists today, Paritosh Sen has come a long way since his days as one of the founding members of the Calcutta Group (1943-53). The group was made up of a sizeable gathering of young, avant-garde artists determined to break with the past, in order to explore the experimental processes that have led to some of the modern styles in the west. Following the ideals of the group, Paritosh was determined to produce art which took into account contemporary values, something which the orthodox schools fail to do. The Calcutta Group sought greater interaction with modern European art, as well as room for socio-political comment.

Below are some influences on his life and work:

Caricatures and the austere

‘Both are integral in my work. Life is full of tears and laughter, joys and sorrows, both are one, like two parallel streams in my work. Caricature and the serious, there is no contradiction. I have always had them in my work; it is my nature… two sides of the same coin. Love and hatred.’

The Calcutta Group

‘The turning point came with the famine, so much man-made anguish. This was one of the catalysts for forming the Calcutta Group at that historical moment, when Indian involvement in World War II began. The language of the Bengal School was not adequate to meet the needs of the time. I began to understand Picasso and Braque and the importance of form in art. ‘

Paris

‘In 1949, after independence, I went to Paris. Suddenly I was confronted with a world which overwhelmed me because before that I had never experienced such a fantastic exposure to modern art.’

The Bengal Famine (1943-1944)

One of the most devastating famines in India, the Bengal Famine was said to have claimed between 2-3 million lives in the Bengal region. As the famine was concurrent with Indian involvement in World War II, critics blamed the government for the widespread suffering. Newspapers and social activists claimed the catastrophe was man-made, brought on by the mass destruction and horrors of war.  Whilst the officials ignored and belittled the affliction, the media made this devastation public. The famine was also a significant forerunner to the Indian independence movement. Avant-garde artists of that period, like Paritosh, incorporated this social commentary into the doctrine of their works.

Paritosh Sen

Paritosh Sen was born on 18 oct 1918, Dacca(present day Bangladesh). During the period of 1936-1940 he completed his Diploma in Fine Art at the Government College of Arts and Crafts, Madras. He was the founding member of the Calcutta Group in 1942. He was diligently involved in the Academie Andre Lhote, Paris Academie la Grande Chaumiere, Ecole des Beaux-Arts (murals) and Ecole des Louvre from 1950-1953. Paritosh Sen taught at the Daly College and Design & Layout, Regional Institute of Printing Technology, Jadavpur for a period of 3 years each from 1954-1979. During  1969-1970 and 1970-1971 he completed two fellowships, the French Fellowship for Designing and Typeface and the J.D.R Illrd Fund Fellowship respectively. In 1981, for a period of a year he was a visiting professor at the Maryland Institute of Art, Baltimore on invitation of Indo-US sub commission on Culture & Education.

Jogen Chowdhury

(b. 1939, India)

“My paintings and drawings are not made;

they grow out of me, as plants grow.”

-Jogen Chowdhury, Aug 5, 1980

With works in the National Gallery of Modern Art, New Delhi, Jogen Chowdhury has built a reputation as a keen observer and dissenter from the norm.

Born in Faridpur in 1939, Jogen Chowdhury was noted in post-modern 1970s India, as the artist in whom moral corruption of the times found its finest artistic imagery. He evolved images in the ink and pastel medium, taking organic icons and turning them into personal symbols of discovery.

In the works of Chowdhury, the line is an outstanding feature that defines what the viewer sees. His obsession with the in-built tension of the line, gave rise to a focus on the intricacies of texture and its refined decorative possibilities. This is perhaps the most alluring and fascinating aspect of Chowdhury’s work. The depth of his paintings remains a delight to the eye while engaging the viewer at a sublime level.

In his strive to remain true to his vision, Chowdhury developed a bold and apparent style that gives his works depth and individuality. Of utmost importance is the representation of the unique reality, life and psyche of his personal experiences. The evolution of his work has seen the birth of a unique Indian style of painting.

On his inner compulsions:
There are certain things in us that we cannot overcome. That can be a positive thing; it can also be a negative thing sometimes. Each personality is related to certain things, which go along with them. Like our Bengali poets, a certain attitude is always there, and I also have certain things with me for which I am important and for which I can be criticised. A sense of obsession with form, the dimension of form, its heaviness – these are always with me; even if I make a single line, my line gets that type of tension. If I make a pastel line, it
has other meanings, but it gets all the characterisation of my nature, so I have seen it repeatedly coming out of my work.

On themes and changes in his work:
Earlier it was naturalistic, now what I find interesting is the sense of decoration in my work, a realistic approach with decorative elements, each figure having its separate movement, interrelated in a specific way. This I wanted to bring into my work. Sometimes consciously, this has created a new element in my work. In the new work, there is that dramatic situation a bit decorative, a lot of new colours coming, subtle movements and poses, which I have had from the beginning but now more refined.

Jaya Ganguly

(b. 1958, India)

Born 1958, in a conservative middle class Bengali family, Jaya graduated from Indian College of Arts, Calcutta. She held her first solo exhibition in Academy of Fine Arts Calcutta, 1982.

Jaya relates to the behaviour and situation of mankind in the society and her reactions to the various forces upon her by the society and environment. Historical endeavours of the balancing acts of mankind with the nature which gets disturbed continuously due to mankind’s efforts to acquire and command greater achievements utilizing its intellects and aspirations.

Her themes focus on people – their intra-actions as well as their interactions among themselves in society and/or natural surroundings. These perceptions, however vary from time to time as Jaya believes nothing is absolute and final. Depending on his/her perception at that point of time, one can always discover a new dimension to a subject, event or happening. If she notices a subjective thing or event, it reacts in her not the way it appears apparently but with the backdrop of such a bigger scenario of mankind’s continuous balancing acts. Thus the landscape remains the same but only object de Art changes their position from time to time in our world.

Jaya has received many reviews in Calcutta, Bombay and New Delhi newspapers, and art journal, etc. Hailed by The Illustrated Weekly of India once and again as the top ten young promising contemporary painters in India, and as the most promising artist in Bengal of the modern era, her works can be found in the collection of the Consulate of the Netherlands, New Delhi and many other private collections in India and abroad.

Srihadi Soedarsono

(b: 1931)

A student of legendary Indonesian nationalist painter S. Sudjojono, Srihadi graduated from the Bandung Institute of Technology in 1959, and completed a masters degree at Ohio State University in 1962. In the U.S., he was influenced by Abstract Expressionism, and upon his return to Indonesia, adopted a primarily semi-abstract style, of which “Sanur Beach at Night” is an exemplary piece.

Srihadi emphasizes the freedom of emotional expression, technique, and execution through strong compositional elements of line and colour – scattered outlines of fishing boats on a powder white beach bathe in the silent indigo night, its visual effect of monumentality and power enhanced by a large canvas.

Soedarsono has taught at many Indonesian institutions, including the Bandung Institute, where he became chairman of the art department in 1970, and at the Jakarta Institute of the Arts, where he became art department chairman in 1973.

Honors and awards over the course of his career include: the Fulbright-Hays Grant (1979); the Seoul International Art Competition’s silver medal (1985); the Japan Foundation Cultural Grant (1990); and becoming Academic Commander of the Italian International Academic Order “Greci-Marino” (1999).

His works are part of diverse permanent collections, including: The National Museum of Jakarta; The United Nations in New York; The Asia and Pacific Museum in Warsaw; The National Gallery of Fine Art in Singapore; and The Fordham University in New York.

He has participated in over 50 group exhibitions since 1945 including: an Indonesian painting exhibition in Washington, DC (1951); the Tenth Sao Paolo Biennale (1969); Contemporary Asian Art (Fukuoka Art Museum, 1980); The First Asia-Pacific Contemporary Art Biennale (1993); and Soul Ties: The Land and Her People, Art from Indonesia (Singapore Art Museum, 1999).

Rudi Mantofani

(b.1973, Indonesia)

Born in 1973, Rudi Mantofani is a sculptor and painter, with an uncanny ability for realism and irony. His works reference the familiar but only to titillate by introducing a sense of the extraordinary or absurd,a banana sculpture splits to reveals its Javanese textile-patterned flesh, guitars with elongated frets, globe that sits deflated in an idealized landscape of lush green, a glorious blue sky juxtaposed against an artificial plastic turf. These play of contrasts and illusions challenge expectations and attitudes, urging one momentarily to suspend disbelief and weigh possibilities and implications.

The up-and-coming Rudi Mantofani is skilled in sculpting, installation art and painting. A graduate from the Indonesian Arts Institute in Yogyakarta, he received an award in 1997 for Best Sculpture.

Rudi’s abstract style is characterised by a surface of minimalist calm. His work is usually dominated by a single entity, which may stand on its own or is repeated several times in the piece. Objects include trees, buds, hills, ships, water and houses, usually placed against an abstract expanse of space.

The nature of his works invokes a meditative mood in the viewer. The composition is simple and subtle layers of observation and detail unveil themselves upon closer observation. This distinctive style has found its way into the hearts of many collectors.

Rudi Mantofani

Rudi Mantofani was born in 1973, Indonesia, In 1993 he enrolled in the Indonesia Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Putu Sutawijaya

(b: 1971, Indonesia)

Hailed as one of the most important young artists to watch out for, Putu Sutawijaya’s canvases are highly charged with the energy, or “qi, that is suggestive of Chinese calligraphy masters. While Chinese calligraphy influences his technique, his subject matter captures the essence of Balinese religious and tribal rituals. The visual impact of his canvases is explosive yet contemplative. They reflect the mutual desire for harmony in order and chaos, a oneness with the universe. Man as the centrifugal figure in paintings is distinctively ‘Sutawijayaand continues to be prominent in his works.

Putu Sutawijaya’s works are part of Gajah Gallery’s permanent collection.

Putu Sutawijaya draws his inspirations from the various Balinese religious rituals. He is especially fascinated with the way communion takes place, where spiritual enlightenment is attained through trance, intoxication and even violence.

Movement, energy and trance are the three most powerful stimuli in his canvases. The movements and stance of the kecak dance are symbolic of the Great Gods (sanghyang). The kechak dance is an intense spiritual dance by a large group of people.

A mental and spiritual climax is reached when the soul suddenly rises to a level of experience much more profound than daily consciousness. At that moment appears a peak of self confidence and extraordinary bliss like a trance, followed by enlightenment. Out of these are born paintings of such intense expression that they reach the farthest limits of universal concepts.

The dance of Sanghyang Jaran, is charged with fiery spirit as the dancer performs on top of burning coal.

Pupuk Daru Purnomo

(b: 1964)

Those who have followed Pupuk’s artistic career love his paintings for their light-hearted depictions of the people of his hometown of Yogyakarta, and its lesser-known corners. They are delightful insights into his townsfolk’s  intimate lives. It could be a tender moment between a mother in fond embrace of her firstborn baby or the mystique of the picturesque Borobudur. Pupuk’s paintings often focus on family ties and the joys derived from it. His art portrays an artist who appreciates kindness and the simple pleasures of life.

Pupuk’s latest works, after recent success at the auction houses, showcase his signature execution of oil and watercolour. His palette ranges from umber to scarlet. They may be dark but are never subdued. These strong colours combine with Pupuk’s impasto strokes and whimsically sensuous lines to celebrate the vivacity in people’s lives. His paintings are a tribute to innocence and simplicity.

Pupuk DP was born in Yogyakarta in 16 July 1964 and graduated from the Faculty of Fine Art and Design at the Indonesia Institute of Arts in 1994. Pupuk has already exhibited extensively in various parts of Indonesia, including Jakarta and Yogyakarta. He was also selected as a finalist in the Philip Morris Art Competition 1997.

His distinctive style won the art audience over and most of his works were sold out during the month-long exhibition. Several of his works are also in the collection of the Singapore Art Museum.

Nyoman Masriadi

(b. 1973, Indonesia)

Nyoman Masriadi is a leading artist of the post-Suharto era and one of the most prominent Indonesian Contemporary artists in the Southeast Asian region. His most recent solo show was in April 2011 in New York. This came after a successful preview of his painting ‘Tragedy’ at Art Basel Miami 2010. Nyoman Masriadi and his works have gained a select collectors base, which includes prominent collectors in and around the region.

Masriadi received his training in art at the Institute Seni Indonesia (ISI) Yogyakarta. From the time he was an art student, he had already been recognized by peers as one of the very first contemporary Balinese artists who eased himself away from an encompassing concern with Balinese life, culture and traditions in his works. The visual imagery and narratives in his paintings are derived from keen and intelligent observations of social life and behavioural traits. Masriadi’s works are marked by consistent high quality — thoughtful in the messages that transmit from scenes and figures in his pictorial world, and painstakingly detailed in execution and finish. His visual vocabulary is striking, continuously refreshing and relevant.

A monograph, ‘Nyoman Masriadi – Reconfiguring the Body’ by renown author and art historian, TK Sabapathy and poet and editor of Tempo Magazine, Goenawan Mohamed was recently launched in Singapore. This publication uncovers the layers and thoughts behind his bold works placed within context of Indonesia. An interview between TK Sabapathy and Nyoman Masriadi lends a rare insight from an artist who prefers to speak through his paintings rather than in interviews.

His maiden solo show took place at the Singapore Art Museum in collaboration with Gajah Gallery in 2008, “Masriadi: Black Is My Last Weapon,” spanned across Masriadi’s 10-year career and explored the evolution of his signature dominant use of the colour black, a motif now widely copied by other Indonesian painters. Masriadi’s preference for the use of black is aimed towards infusing his pictorial bodies with weight and immensity. The show also highlighted Masriadi’s sarcastic humour, often expressed through small scribbles in black ink on strategic places on his canvases, and his focus on power relations inherent in everyday situations.

Nyoman Masriadi

Enrolled in the ISI yogyakarta, Fine Art drawing department in 1993.

Mangu Putra

(b:1963, Indonesia)

Within a short span of time since the beginning of his artistic career, Mangu Putra has caused more than a stir in his exhibitions throughout Indonesia. A graphic designer before turning into full-time painting in 1998, his paintings exude acuteness and sensitivity to visual forms. The influence from his design background is further apparent in his technique and the execution of ideas on his canvasses, where strong lines, shapes and colours are composed in a mature and harmonious manner.

In creating, Mangu Putra believes in absolute freedom in aesthetic expression. Even though the works of Mangu Putra possess certain distinctive characteristics, the artist seldom abides by one style of painting abstract, realistic, figurative. Painting to him is more importantly, a process of self-discovery and capturing of the spiritual essence of nature.

Mangu Putra preferred choice of subject includes mountains, the wilderness, waters and fish, all of which point to a love of nature. These elements serve as metaphors in his commentary on the state of the natural environment and humanity.

If I had to choose one theme tying all my works together, it would be nature. I truly love nature, not because of its beauty but because nature contains something awe-inspiring, a strength which words can never be enough to express.

There is something in nature that cannot be perceived but whose presence can be keenly felt. All of my creative work is at base an attempt to capture, reveal, and translate this something into a visual-aesthetic language.

- Mangu Putra ( Nature, Culture, Tension, 2000)

Made Widyadiputra (Lampung)

 (b:1981)

Also known as Lampung, Made Widyadiputra studied sculpture at the Indonesian Institute of Art in Yogyakarta (ISI).

Part of the new group of young Balinese artists, Lampung is a member of Sanggar Dewata Indonesia, following the footsteps of his well known contemporaries such as Nyoman Gunarsa, Made Wianta, Made Djirna and Nyoman Masriadi. His works responds to the perpetually changing nature of today’s contemporary art, while also keeping his ties with his traditional Balinese roots. Often his works are an interpretation of Balinese traditions, or critical viewpoints of Indonesia’s socio-political issues.

Excelling in the field of sculpture, his works are known for its ability to embrace the space which it lodges itself in, deploying its environment as a part of the artwork itself. Lampung is also renowned for his use of a variety of materials. His latest works sees himself moving away from the traditional three dimensional nature of sculptures, but rather an exploration of the three dimensional in the two dimensional in an attempt to blur the typical pigeonhole distinction of mediums.

Made Widyadiputra was born on 10 October 1981,Indonesia.

Made Djirna

(b: 1957, Indonesia)

Growing up in Bali, I Made Djirna was enchanted by illustrations of Balinese myths. Fascinated by the powerful depiction of good and evil spirits and the turmoil of the human soul, he began to draw and paint by the age of six.

Djirna mastered traditional Balinese art styles as a member of the Young Artists Movement in Bali. As his artistic skills grew, Djirna left his hometown for the now Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia in Yogyakarta, where he spent several years exploring the various issues arising from globalisation and a changing Indonesian society. In this new environment, Djirna’s artistic spirit thrived and he began painting beyond what was traditionally beautiful and pleasing.

Today, Djirna art explores a broad range of themes- from social issues and politics in Indonesia and the world, to personal reflections on village life and human relationships. One of Indonesia’s most recognized artists, Djirna has received many awards for his works. He has exhibited, both solo and in groups, in Australia, Canada, Guam, Indonesia, Singapore and Switzerland.

M. Irfan

(b.1972, Indonesia)

Irfan seeks to explore truths through perspective, minimal forms and the complex relationships within them. His articulation of the impossibility of perfection can be found instead, in the seeming perfection of his geometric landscapes and subjects. Drawing from a lack of figurative representation, he tends towards post-modernist ideals of the death of the author. One is drawn to his works as a challenge to find a grand narrative(s) hidden between the lines.

Irfan’s works are akin to contemporary architecture, such that it conveys no more beyond its structural form and existence. His images of cubic structures, vast landscapes, trains and other symbolically fertile objects convey an outdoor grandiose that paints a reality without a context.

In spite of the subject-matters depicted with such potential for movement that occupies time and space, they are juxtaposed by a stasis achieved through the used of monochromatic colour schemes. Blues, greys with minimal specks or yellow or red help to create this tension between the signifiers and what is signified. When a viewer’s eyes are fixed on his work, he/she is transported into a realm that is isolated from reality, and exists not beyond the painting itself.

M.Irfan

M. Irfan was born in 1972 in Indonesia. He completed his Bachelor of fine arts in 1999 at the Indonesia Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta.

Koeosema Affandi

(b:1907 – 1990, Indonesia)

Affandi is considered the Indonesian artist par excellence. From his earliest collaborations with the artist groups Kelompok Lima Bundung (1930s), to the Pelukis Rakyat (founded 1947), and LEKRA (late 1950s), Affandi was committed to creating a new artistic medium for Indonesia.

Affandi’s art is characterised by an impulsiveness and energy, much like man behind it. A self-taught artist, Affandi never learned to use the palette. Instead, he squeezes paint directly from the tube onto canvas, sometimes using his thumb as a tool. The rows of paint on the canvas interact, moving freely into shapes and forms which eventually emerge as recognizable subjects of his choice. The artist often spends a week studying a subject, but the actual painting seldom takes longer than 90 furious minutes.

It was during the years at the Shantiniketan in India (late 1940s) and on his travels through Europe and America (early 1950s), that Affandi’s art was to have reached its full ripening.

Alongside contemporaries, such as Jackson Pollock, the artist’s impact on the art world is immense. His prize at the 1954 Venice Biennale is a testament to the high regard in which Affandi was held. He also received various awards from Indonesia and Italy, with works exhibited in major exhibitions across Asia, Europe and the Americas. By the 1950s, the works of Affandi were acquired by major art collectors and institutions all over the world.

An anti-intellectual, Affandi did not take part in any local or global dialectic on modernism or other issues of the era. He located his art purely in direct relationship between him and the subject observed, preferring to call himself a drawer (tukang gambar), rather than a painter (pelukis). In his own way, Affandi makes a pioneering statement about modern Indonesian art, leaving an enduring legacy in the international art world even to this day.

Koeosema Affandi

Koeosema Affandi was born in1907 Cirebon, Java, Indonesia. In 1943 he had his first one-man exhibition at the Putera building in Jakarta. During the period of 1944-45 he helped establish the ‘Young Artists of Indonesia’. He joined Hendra Gunawan in founding ‘Pelukis Rakjat’ (‘People’s Painters’) in 1947. In 1949 he left for India on a scholarship awarded by the Indian Government. Affandi visited Europe – Belgium, England, Holland, France and Italy and held several one-man exhibitions. He represented Indonesia at the 1954 Venice Biennale. He returned to Indonesia in September 1954 and taught at art academy ASRI (Akademi Seni Rupa Indonesia), Yogyakarta. During the period of 1957-58 Visited the United States of America and held exhibitions in selected leading cities sponsored by the United States Information Service and the Asia Foundation. In 1966 Invited by Brazil Government to exhibit in the museum of Modern Art, Rio de Janeiro and the museum of Modern Art, Sao Paulo.

Jumaldi Alfi

(b.1973,Indonesia)

Jumaldi Alfi is a painter who works sequentially on a set of ideas and themes. Common among these series is the urge for immediacy through the act of drawing, marking and scribbling applied over variations of scapes and scenes, clued by way of elemental aspects such as foreground, horizon and suggestions of space. Alfi’s markings are feverish, shifting and ever-transforming against a tableau that is disconcerting in its fixity and quiet monumentality. This is heightened in his drawings characterised in contrast by the proliferation of figures in various physical and metal state.

Jumaldi Alfi

Jumaldi Alfi was born on July 19, 1973 in Lintau, West Sumatra. He studied at the Indonesia Institute of The Arts (ISI) Yogyakarta and completed his B.A. in Fine Arts in 1999.

J. Ariadhitya Pramuhendra

(b.1984, Indonesia)

J. Ariadhitya Pramuhendra is one among the current generation of young Indonesian artists who brings the issue of identity to the fore by traversing various curves of thought, including an inheritance of the academic thought pattern that perceives identity as a discursive practice.

Graduating from Bandung Institute of Technology in 2007, Pramuhendra’s works continue to constitute a personal biography that he uses, as Aminudin TH Siregar puts it,  “to reveal the didactic functions of art:  to build a spirit of his past, to open a road to access his identity.

As in his first solo exhibition in 2008 titled “On Last Supper”, Pramuhendra’s works have the propensity to tend towards  the problem of religiosity and morality in the community. “Spacing Identities”, another solo exhibition at the National University of Singapore Museum, was a series of his that emerged as reflections on individual crises towards space.

Working mostly with charcoal as a medium, Pramuhendra’s works depict a desire to rediscover the past, and to understand his present identity. It is through this that we,as an audience, are invited to unveil the question that pivots about the desire for self-identification – who am I?

J. Ariadhitya Pramuhendra

Born inSemarang,Indonesia in 1984. In 2007, J. Ariadhitya Pramuhendra completed his BFA with a major in Printmaking from the Art Dept of Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB),Bandung.

Iwan Effendy

(b.1979, Indonesia)

One of Indonesia’s up and coming young artist, Iwan Effendy represents the younger genre of artist significantly influenced by the pop culture of today’s avant-garde; integrating the new age urban culture into his works of art.

Despite not finishing his formal academic education at the ISI, the Sleman- born artist is determined to claim his existence in the art world as an established artist, verified by the strength of his first solo exhibition the “Last Fortress”. His warm embrace towards the urban culture also closely associates him with iconic images. His works lends itself as a magnet for product and industrial design; of which Iwan is also currently working on

Iwan Effendy’s works capitulates to the paradoxes of Western multiculturalism which in turn causes the changing values in Indonesia’s culture today. We can see traces of influences of Pop Culture, the Indie Movement, graphic novels, lowbrow art, pop surrealism streetstyle fashion and more, that somehow also affect the sense of becoming of this part of the Indonesian young generation. And in this, Iwan Effendy has succeeded in putting his creative processes in its own place within Indonesia’s contemporary art practice.

Handiwirman Saputra

(b.1975, Indonesia)

Handiwirman Saputra uses regular everyday materials including cotton, human hair, plastic wrap, wood etc., which he then repositions in a manner contrary to convention in his works. He studies the relationship between the extraordinary and the mundane, and more specifically, how the power of perception can seize imagination and alter one’s impression of the ordinary. Perception gives forms their meaning and meaning is always open to interpretation.

He works in both paintings and sculptures and they mysteriously evoke a faint recognition of something that had been seen before but is essentially unidentifiable. This unusual reading of materials is perhaps indicative of his likewise unique work method. He thinks more in pictures rather than in words, using this mental visual to map out the meaning of his work. His titles too are meant to challenge the viewer’s perception of the work, often misleading rather than leading the viewer’s interpretation of the work.

In Handiwirman’s showcase at the Singapore Biennale 2006, he created a series of 5 paintings, measuring 180 x 180 cm each. Titled Salon #2, the work is hung at the City Hall venue in the biennale. Rifky Effendy aptly sums up the significance of the artist for the Indonesian contemporary art scene “In the map of contemporary art development inIndonesia, his works have contributed a different shade of colour, especially in the post-reformasi era, when most artwork is tightly connected to the social and political discourse. The artworks depict a symptom of tradition, caught between the collective value of a society – which has lost its belief in such value – and the individual belief in fighting for such values. By poeticizing the everyday, he reflects a constantly shifting world.”

Handiwirman Saputra

Handiwirman Saputra was born in 1975 in Indonesia. He completed his studies at the School of Visual Art, Indonesia Institute of the Arts (ISI), Yogyakarta in 1996.

Dikdik Sayadikumullah

(b:1973, Indonesia)

Dikdik’’s painting is considered to be kept in the Bandung tradition of abstraction in art, but through his own study of Realism. Inspired by the history of Impressionism and the ‘painting revival’ in the 1990′’s, especially through the works of Edward Hopper, Chuck Close and Gerhard Richter, Dikdik interprets the possibility of representation through Realism within it’s critical limits. His works reveal a theoretical relation of abstraction and representation in his art-making process.

His recent works centre around themes such as journey, travelling and very often the car/motor motif is used. As a reflection of today’’s age of simulation as one theorized by Jean Baudrillard, the logic of ‘driving’ has replaced a traditional but very subjective idea of projection and possession. Today, digital technology and computer systems saturate society through the endless streams of information available. This is akin to someone in a moving car where images are being accelerated and sped across by motoring. Hence, objects accelerate toward the viewer, drawing nearer with each turn and change of gear. This is the basic idea of Dikdik’s works. Modern or Post-modern society does not project itself to ‘exit’ but to be drawn nearer, or even inundated by various images of objects flashed on a television screen. His works pry open the meanings of a poetical journey of living experience by realizing the artificial meanings behind all seemingly realistic appearances.

Dikdik’’s method of interpretating appearances is very much inspired by Eastern Philosopher, Mulla Shadra. Shadra assumed change as the manifestation of the existence of a life form itself; to trust that the substance of each and every object is a diffraction of movement and change, or perhaps the process of ‘Becoming’ (shairurah). Through this method, one can see the theoretical linkages he has with American Abstract Expressionism, but still consisting of perceptive differences in the context of spiritualism.

Dikdik Sayahdikumullah was born in Majalengka,Western Java in 1973. He obtained his BA and Master’s Degree from the Fine Art Department at the ITB and Doctoral in Painting at Fukuoka Japan. Dikdik was also invited to New York for an artists Residency Program at the Asian Cultural Centre.

Teng Nee Cheong

(b.1951, Singapore)

Born and based in Singapore, the art of Teng Nee Cheong is known for its colour and exotica. The artist admits to being influenced by Asian mural paintings and Persian miniatures, especially the stylization of botanic.

Teng’s bright colours are specifically chosen and juxtaposed for maximum effect. They are more than a mere means to an end. “My colours are getting not only more intense, but darker and heavier.” He observes that “during a full moon, the shadows of trees and plants take on a new and very different character .”

Unusual compositional elements accentuate the desired aesthetic. For example, a vase barely fits into the top of a painting in order to fully show the traditional cloth that lies underneath. Objects appear to defy gravity. The focus in his paintings thus turns towards structure and colour.

The exuberance of Teng’s paintings seems to be so different from the soft-spoken and rather shy artist that he is “Someone once commented that my paintings are so happy. Although the implication is that I did not seem to be a happy person,” he remembers. ‘ I don’t want to paint sad things , at least not for now.”

Teng Nee Cheong

Teng Nee Cheong was born in 1951,Singapore . He graduated from the Nanyang Academy of Fine Art in 1968.

Parvathi Nayar

(b.-, Singapore)

Situated within postcolonial/postmodernist paradigms, her paintings engage with a visual language rooted in an Indian vocabulary, but is predicated upon themes of more universal appeal, whether emotional or scientific.

Increasingly her work has moved towards mixed media series like Woman and the Elements (1993, 20 paintings that juxtapose the interactions of women and primal elements); Woman and Her Emotions (1995/96 seven paintings, each playing with a specific feeling like Lust, Frustration or Curiosity); the notion of cyclical time in Meditations on the Zodiac (1996-98, on the annual progression of months) and Time Cycles: A Book of Hours (2000, on the changing energies of a single day).

The paintings, mostly, are vibrantly coloured and layered, the mixed media allowing for both controlled and chance happenings on the surface. Her basic art training and fine art degree was in India, but having lived and worked as an artist and arts writer for the past 14 years outside India, the gaze is that of the Indian. She is primarily a painter, and over the past few years, the body has been the chief site of exploration in her art; she has always been deeply interested in the layering of textures and pigment in her work. She has been exhibiting regularly for the past 10 years in Southeast Asia.

Recently, her work has been concerned with collaborative work, and looking to new ways to present the performative aspects of painting as in the show Time Cycles (2002).

Parvathi Nayar
Parvathi Nayar was born in India. She is a visual artist currently based in Singapore where she works as an arts correspondent for the Business Times. She completed her BA Fine Art with a distinction from Stella Maris College, University of Madras India and was ranked first in the University as well as the Best Outgoing Student by the Dept of Fine Arts in 1985. In 2003-2004 she completed her MA Fine Art from the Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design on a Chevening Scholarhip from the British Government.

Jason Lim

(b. 1966,Singapore)

Regarded as Singapores next master ceramist, Jason Lims artistic growth over the past decade has been remarkable. Also a performance artist, Jason combines skilled craftsmanship in sculpting with influences from performance art. The result is ceramic pieces that go beyond being merely objects of beauty, to subjects that provoke thought and interaction with the viewer.

Jasons ceramics transcend the tradition of functionality. Almost sculptural instead, his works take on strikingly organic forms an asymmetrical plate, a sealed vessel or a perforated bottle. Deliciously earthy yet fragile, the duality in his works prompts one to ponder over the creation process, while their asymmetry provokes a rethinking of balance and symmetry. Unpretentious in nature, Jasons ceramics exude a beautiful stark rawness that reflects the artists skill and energy.

Jasons first show was in Canterbury, England in 1992. He has since exhibited across the globe in Australia, Germany, India, Japan, Poland, Singapore, Thailand and the Netherlands.

Jason Lim

Jason Lim was born in 1966 in Singapore.  He completed his Bachelor of Arts (Honors) at the Central St Martins College of Art & Design,London,England in 1992. Following that he completed his Master of Fine Arts, Lasalle-SIA-RMIT,Singapore in 2003.

Eric Chan

(b. 1975, Malaysia)

The award winning works of Eric Chan are based on moving shapes. The act of capturing the subject on canvas, be it a flower, plant or landscape, is akin to a photographer immortalizing a fleeting moment – a glimpse of space in time.

Depicted mostly in somber colors, his paintings open the way into a dreamlike world where the viewer moves into a different state of mind. The confidence and strength of his brushstrokes render on canvas a flowing and meditative dynamism.

Born in Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia, Eric Chan studied art in Singapore and Australia. He received his Diploma of Fine Arts at the LASALLE-SIA College of the Art and Master of Fine Arts (painting) at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology. The artist has exhibited in Indonesia, Malaysia, Australia and Singapore.

Chua Ek Kay

(b. 1947 – 2007, China)

Born in China in 1947, Chua studied Chinese ink painting under the late Fan Chang Tien (1907-1987) from 1975 to 1984. Years later, he took up formal training in Western Art and graduated from the University of Western Sydney in 1995.

Citing Fan as the most important influence in his artistic career, Chua is also proficient in Chinese calligraphy, poetry writing and seal carving. He has a seal which reads, lather awkwardness than skillfulness. This is consistent with the philosophy of traditional scholar-artists who often sought to distance themselves from the technical virtuosity of professional painters. Chua’s works do not seek to replicate nature but serve as a creative expression of his thoughts and personality.

‘Chua discharges a loaded brush with marvellous swiftness- his hand hovers, his eyes dart, his wrist flicks. His brush is spun and twisted or punctuates the rice paper in a brusque and furious manner. His execution has been compared to a feverish performance as it often involves the co-option of his entire body. Chua leans and stretches, strides across formidable sheets of paper & his body intermittently contorting and resting’ – Lindy Poh

They appear as evocative brush marks, punctuating the unspoilt surface of the paper almost randomly. Some works are radically minimalist & other are dense with unruly energies, with ink marks swarming almost completely over the paper surfaces. All these faces of the lotus pulsate with palpable life.

The poet in Chua can see poetry in the most mundane blank walls. He often chose to depict old buildings with their crumbling walls and dilapidated facades. With incisive calligraphy strokes, rich tonal values and textures that he coaxes out of his brush, Chua breathes life into inanimate objects. His cityscapes belong spiritually in the realm of Chinese art. Chua views his subjects in close-up more in the manner of easel painting than as a hanging scroll. His art has made a breakthrough from a conventional Chinese art form to that of a more contemporary, Western style. In doing so, Chua has shown himself to be very much an artist of his time.

Chua Ek Kay

Chua Ek Kay was born 1947, China. He studied chinese ink painting with Fan Chang Tien from 1975 to 1987. He completed his advanced diploma at the Laselle-SIA college of the arts in 1989. In 1994 he completed his BFA in Fine at the University of Tasmania, Australia. A year after he obtained his MA (Hons) in Visual Arts from the University of Western Sydney, Australia.

Nguyen Trung

(b. 1940, Vietnam)

One of Vietnam’s best-known artists, Nguyen Trung’s works are found at international auctions as well as in private and museum collections across the globe.

To the artist, art is shaped by humanity and the journey of life to which love, peace, birth and death are intrinsic. Having undergone several expressionistic variations in his career, the artist moves between abstract and figurative works.

Trung’s art is deeply influenced by a combination of Vietnamese culture and Buddhist philosophy. Memories of Vietnam’s landscapes and temples, poems, folksongs, and pagodas inspire his paintings, infusing the canvas with a gentle meditative spirit.

This same sprit is embodied in his females. Whether in prayer, picking fruit, holding fish or in meditation, these long-limbed figures exude a sense of quiet elegance. Their expressions are calm and enlightened; their gestures and movements unhurried.

One of Vietnam’s foremost abstract artists, Nguyen Trung pays homage to ancient artefacts and temple architecture in his abstract works. There, one finds references to pagoda gates, temple walls and architectural grounds.

Rough textures, built up by layers of oil paint or mixed media (sometimes clay or paper), as well as sombre colours tell of the effects of weather and time. Trung also focuses on the details on physical structures, whether by design or by passage of time. Physical decay is often his muse. He once aptly described his subject matter as “moss covered walls on which sunlight and dew drops slip down their ancient and cracked facades.” Bridges to distant eras, these works exude timelessness, connecting us to periods and empires that existed before.

Nguyen Trung

Nguyen Trung was born inVietnam in 1940. He graduated from the National Fine Art College of Saigon in 1960. A Founding member of the Young Artists’ Association (1996), Trung was the editor of My Thuat, a former fine arts magazine in Vietnam. A regular feature at the major auctions, Trung’s works are among the collection of the Fine Arts Museum of Vietnam and Singapore Art Museum

Ho Huu Thu

(b:1943, Vietnam)

I realise that ideologies and prejudice have thrown this world into chaos and

imprisoned our hearts. I have removed this from my art and created a world void of prejudice.

 - Ho Huu Thu

Painting since fifteen and enrolled in art school at seventeen, Ho Huu Thu’’s initial influence was the western art of Gauguin, Picasso and Chagall. Subsequently it was Buddhist philosophy and Nguyen Gia Tri, one of Vietnam’s best known lacquer masters (1906-1993), who inspired the artist.

Elements of impressionism and Buddhist spirituality are captured within Thu’s works. Light is powerfully used, creating layers and subtle shades that draw us deeper into the composition. Wherein lies an enchanting world of innocence and peace, of ethereal beauties, maidens on a pilgrimage and mother with child.

The translucency on his canvasses creates a sense of spiritual formlessness, transporting the viewer to a meditative plane.

One of Southeast Asia’s most important and respected artists today, Ho Huu Thu is one of the few contemporary Vietnamese artists with works represented at major international sales. A tireless artist, we can look forward to more of his enchanting creations in the years to come.

Man wishes to search throughout the external world of objects to record images to satisfy his desire for beauty.  He also seeks a description of his innermost self, what is in his heart and soul.  Actually, he has only partly reached an answer on marvelous concepts of God, beauty, nature, and phenomena.  All these concepts have come from outer world.

For my part, truth does not exist in the world, but only in consciousness, myths, as well as in very sensitive feelings, where a newer, more splendid world has been created and there is only Truth and Beauty.

Painting is a game played by a quiet soul of truth and beauty and is expressed through hidden words that everyone possesses and wishes to observe.  That is the very pure symbol which suddenly opens, amazing us with fascination.”

Vasan Sitthiket

(b: 1957, Thailand)

Vasan has been exposing social problems in Thailand through poetry, performance art and song for the past 20 years. However, it is his paintings that rail against social injustice that have brought him the deserved recognition from the International art community. Until then, reviewers castigated his work as being indulgent and a cheap Imitation of German Expressionism. To him, “style is irrelevant. What counts is your feeling. Painting expresses your head and your heart together in one.”

Vasan’s blatant approach to social realism goes against the 2000 year-old don’t-rock-the-boat tradition In Thailand. “Art in a rotten world can’t be landscapes,” he retorts, deliberately overstepping the boundaries. Full of questions about the meaning of life, Vasan devours literature at the British Council and the AUA libraries. His full attendance at the activities at Goethe Institute during a seven-year period probably explains the so-called German Influences In his paintings. Unlike other Thai artists who have attained international recognition, Vasan cultivated his own cosmopolitan weltanschaung without ever leaving the country.

While Thailand rushes to assume the outwards trappings of a newly industrialized country, Vasan’s art implores consideration on the effects of rampant materialization. He sees America, Europe and Japan as “dead” countries whose populaces have made Faustian bargain, trading their souls for consumer goods. “The sickness in the world is coming here to Thailand. Money makes you give up your honesty. We’re working for what? To be happy in hell.”

No stratum of Thai society escapes Vasan’s critique. If Thais were the devout Buddhist practitioners they claim to be, he says, they would be enemies of consumerism, not its slaves. Vasan learnt his Buddhism through extensive readings in the literature. The essence of Buddhism is a search for true enlightenment, but he believes the Buddhism taught in schools subtly twists the basic tenets. For example, the concept of ubekha which means “don’t get angry” is now promulgated as don’t rebel”.

‘“My work is in Thailand’,”says Vasan. ‘I love this country. I am ready to be a martyr. Death is not the enemy of life.” He admits he wouldn’t be surprised if one day someone wielding a sharp knife emerged from a crowd. “In the end, we all die anyway. If I’m still alive, I’ll paint. If I’m dead, no painting.”’

Ahmad Zakii Anwar

(b:1955, Malaysia)

A graduate of the School of Art and Design, MARA Institute of Technology Malaysia, Ahmad Zakii Anwar began his career as a graphic artist, producing some of the leading advertising graphics of his time before turning to fine art practice.

Zakii came to attention for his virtuosity and command of a spectrum of media from charcoals to oils, building a reputation for stunning photo-realist still-life paintings and expressive portraits. Later, a more contemporary edge surfaced in his works as Zakii introduced urban subjects and settings into his canvases. He is lauded for capturing not just city motifs and urban features but also a distinctive psychological dimension and cinematic quality in these scenarios. Zakii’s preoccupation with the spiritual or metaphysical aspects of urban life, as seen through his use of icons, symbols and allegories (including metaphors of theatre, performance and masks) have also marked his practice.

In “Being”, Ahmad Zakii Anwar’s most  recent solo exhibition held at the National University of Singapore Museum in 2009, his series of solitary figures “provocatively propose the body as not just the locus of physiological processes and metabolisms but also as a target directly involved in a sociocultural field; power relations have an immediate hold upon it, the invest it, mark it and train it, perhaps even torture it”, as put by Shabbir Hussain Mustafa, an assistant curator at the NUS museum.

Zakii’s remarks in an interview conducted for the exhibition “Being” were both revealing and ambivalent. He says, “my works examine the diverse belief systems, from paintings of Christ-like figures to depictions of the Buddha. And in all of these I don’t find a contradiction. Ibn Arabi, the Andalusian Sufi, has a wonderful term for it. He calls it, ‘…uniting the contraries.’”

Yunizar

(b. 1971, Indonesia)

Born in 1971, Yunizar is a painter whose works may be described by an attempt to advance his preoccupation for still-life. Bottles, potted-cactus, apples and other elements are painted singly, and later reproduced in simplified outlines, eventually multiplying exponentially as miniscule elements on a vast canvas, as crammed two-dimensional landscapes choking on its own reproductive capacity. At other times he obliterates this multiplicity, displacing it with a single figure, or a head, unsmiling, disfigured and consumed by a sense of estrangement or exile. In a distinctive series Coretan (Marks), lines and markings are deployed as frantic utterance, obfuscating and never declaring any form of intent. However, the sense of narrative is kept remaining in the fringes of the frame, is eternally held in anxious tension.

One of Indonesia’s most dynamic new artists, Yunizar draws from a rich heritage to create images that evoke memories of dreams and myths as well as the mundane.

Yunizar spent his formative years at the Indonesian Institute of Arts in Yogyakarta. This is a school of national pride and the heart of progressive art-making in Indonesia. Historically, Yogyakarta is the seat of traditional, global and popular fused in a fertile and stimulating environment, culminating in an art scene that is bold and original.

Yunizar’s training and maturity reveal themselves in his sophisticated and expressive style, articulated through a playful composition and subtle palette. Executed primarily in acrylic and pencil, his works stand out in terms of texture, colour, brushwork, volume and rhythm. A restrained palette of cool colours- yellows, browns and greens- is deliberately dirtied and smudged in his working and reworking of the canvas. The result is a highly tactile work that entices the viewer to feel the piece.

The simplicity of the artwork belies a complex narrative. There are recurring themes in Yunizar’s works, themes intimately linked in the timeless dream world. Stiff figures and mask-like portraits, mythical creatures and floating objects inhabit his canvasses. In this fantasy world, Godzilla-like creatures battle, goats howl and giant dogs swallow snakes for breakfast. It is a place of play and danger, of child-like whimsy fraught with menace.

This psychological suspense is further evident in Yunizar’s portraits. In his figures, mask-like faces are surrounded by an ominous dark haze, or share a space with ambiguous floating objects as in Pesta. The faces look out with insouciance, but the expressions are curiously concerned at the same time. There is a sense of brooding anxiety, a certain worrisome emptiness. His figures pose in similar states, whether stiffly in their own confined spaces like in Sanda Jepit, or in pensive reveries (Berharap), all psychologically charged.

Despite the disquiet in these little narratives, Yunizar bestows on them a poetic presence. They are also landscapes of reflection. In the cool meditative abstracts like Berdikir Tentang Alam and Sesuata, mountains are contemplated, identities explored. In these beautifully balanced compositions, there is a spiritual searching of the mind, a quiet journey in a quest for self and identity.

Yunizar

Yunizar was born in 1971, Indonesia. He completed his high school at the Indonesian Fine Arts High School, Padang in 1988. In 1993 he successfully completed the Fine Arts Degree Programme at the Indonesian Institute of the Arts, Yogyakarta.
